Location: Lake Charles, Louisiana | Winchester model 69a serial number? Hi all, I have a Winchester model 69a, and I'm looking for the serial number. The closest thing I can find is some kind of markings on the barrel and right above the rear sight. Can you guys help me possibly find the SN, find out when it was made, and possibly what it's worth? I love learning about my guns. Definitely not going to sell it. |

Location: California | Interesting question, and something I never looked for. I have my grandfather's Winchester Model 69. The first gun I ever fired as a kid. I still love shooting it 60 years later. I just looked for a serial number to no avail and even took off the stock and found nothing in a hidden place, nor is there a number on the bolt. Those are proof marks on the barrel and near the rear sight. Puzzled, I did an internet search and found several sources that confirmed these rifles were produced without serial numbers. Location: Missouri | If a gun is old enough, it won't have a serial number. You might try contacting Winchester directly to inquire if there is any way to get some history on the gun. |

Location: eastern shore, MD | My Winchester 67A has no serial numbers either, nor does my Stevens Arms and Tool Company 12ga SXS...the older guns have no serial numbers (Winchester, Stevens) and apparently made do with a trademark which at the time was sufficient. The best you're going to get for dating the gun will be wikipedia and some forums but you won't find a specific date of manufacture, just a between era date. As to value...Gun-broker or its like. My experience with guns with no serial numbers is they're not very collectable and bring little value which is not to say that they aren't good guns. |

It will be passed along in the family someday just as he gave it to me when he was 80. The fact that it is still a tack driver makes me smile every time I shoot it. |

Location: Northern CA. | I am going from memory and may be wrong, but I am very sure that serial numbers were not required on guns until the 1968 gun control act was passed. After that law, all firearms were required to have a serial number. How else are you going to keep a firearm registration list at ATF unless you have serial numbers on the 4473 forms. |

Location: eastern shore, MD | I wouldn't trade my 67A for three 1022's...it is a rabbit killing machine along with the occasional deer it used to take long ago. |

I have a Remington Model 512 made in the 1940s and if you take it out of the stock, it has four characters on the left side of the barrel. You can go to Remington's website and those four characters will denote the month and year it was manufactured. Is it possible the proof marks on your Winchester might have the same purpose? |

Location: Northern CA. | If you search under '1968 gun control act' you will find that one of the requirements of the act was that all new guns made in the U.S. and all guns imported into the U.S. were now required to have a serial number on the firearm. I just finished searching it and found it in about 30 seconds. |

Retired Moderator & Gunsmith Location: CB, IA | brandon12502, Federal law required handguns to have a serial number since the mid-1920's, however rifles and shotgun did not require a serial number until Jan 1, 1969. Your Winchester Mod 69A was in production from 1937 to 1963 so it was not required to have a serial number. Winchester, like many other gun manufacturers used serial numbers on most of their centerfire rifles but not on some rimfire models. The Mod 69 went into production in 1935 and was upgraded to a Mod 69A in 1937. Later in the production run (about 1946) the bolt handle was changed from a straight to a slightly swept-back shape. Soon after, a grooved trigger was introduced. Toward the end of production (about 1960) the receiver became available with grooves for aftermarket scope mounts, the bolts were chromed as were trigger guards, and a magazine guard plates was introduced. Based on these changes, you may be able to narrow the date of manufacture. All Winchesters have skyrocketed in value in the past few years. A 69A in excellent condition could easily bring $400~500 ... more if it has target sights and way more if it is a 'Gallery Model'. |

Which Model of Rifle?
There are 3 Models with several variations of the models. The Models are separated primarily by date of manufacture. Within the variations, the standard rifle had a plain walnut straight stock, with a crescent buttplate, and a 12 groove slide handle. The Deluxe variety has a checkered stock and may have a pistol grip and/or other added features.
Use the Key to determine which gun you have. Each level of the key has TWO choices. Start at 'a' and then select one of the 'a' choices. Follow the path through the key to determine your rifle type. Then confirm with the overall descriptions. These guns were very popular and some have gone through many hands. Each owner had an opportunity to modify the gun, add parts, change parts, and remove features. Be alert for such modifications, and remember that any modification from the original probably decreases value of your gun.
